Keto for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know

Keto for beginners - AMMI blog

At its core, the ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat eating plan. The goal is to put your body into a state of ketosis — a metabolic process where your system stops relying on glucose for energy and starts breaking down fats into ketones instead.

Starting this diet can sometimes feel like trying to assemble Flatpack furniture without the manual — you have a mountain of information, but something still squeaks in the end. Everyone wants quick, logical, and above all, practical answers to avoid making unnecessary mistakes.

To save you from wandering around and reading conflicting advice, we’ve gathered the most common questions beginners face. Here is what actually happens to your body and how to turn the theory into daily practice.

1. “Why do I lack energy during the first few days?”

This is the so-called “keto flu.” When you cut carbs, your body goes into a mild shock because its favorite easy fuel has been taken away, forcing it to burn fat instead. While the engine switches gears, you lose more water and essential electrolytes.

  • Fact: When insulin levels drop, the kidneys flush out sodium faster (National Center for Biotechnology Information / NCBI, 2020).

  • The Solution: A bit more salt in your food, plenty of water, and some patience. Your body will find its new rhythm within 3 to 7 days.

2. “How many carbs are actually allowed?”

The sweet spot for most people is up to 20–30 grams of net carbs per day (total carbs minus fiber). For comparison: a single medium banana contains about 25 grams of sugar. That’s how easy it is to cross the limit if you aren’t paying attention.

  • Fact: Medical protocols define the threshold of 20–30g of net carbs as a reliable marker for maintaining endogenous ketosis in adults (NCBI StatPearls, 2023).

3. “Do I have to eat only butter and avocados?”

Definitely not. Fats are fuel and keep you full, but protein is the building block.

  • Fact: Adequate intake of protein and essential amino acids during ketosis is crucial for preserving lean muscle mass (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2015).

If you ignore protein, your body starts breaking down its own muscles instead of excess fat.

4. “What can I snack on when I want something crunchy in the evening?”

Most standard chips and popcorn are loaded with starch and will kick you out of ketosis in no time. The solution here is low-carb foods with a high protein profile.

A great example is AMMI’s popped pork rinds. They are 100% keto-friendly, packed with 93% protein, gluten-free, and made completely without deep-frying oil. You get that satisfying crunch and rich flavor without breaking your diet.

5. “What about alcohol? Is it completely banned?”

You don’t need to become a hermit, but your choice of drink matters a lot. Beer and sugary cocktails are packed with fast carbs and will stop ketosis immediately.

  • Fact: The liver prioritizes metabolizing alcohol before it can go back to burning fat (Journal of Clinical Investigation, 1988).

  • The Right Choice: Pure spirits (whiskey, gin, vodka) or a glass of dry wine contain nearly zero carbs. Just keep in mind that your tolerance to alcohol drops noticeably on keto, so don’t overdo it.

6. “Why did my weight loss stall?”

Hitting a “plateau” is completely normal. In the beginning, you mostly lose water weight. After that, the process slows down as your metabolism readjusts.

  • Fact: Weight loss is not a linear process; as body mass decreases, your basal metabolic rate drops too (Obesity Reviews, 2018).

  • Tip: Stick to Clean Label products with short ingredient lists where you know exactly what you’re getting, so you can avoid hidden calories.

At the end of the day, ketosis is just biochemistry, not a punishment. Once you understand how your body works, you stop stressing over counting every single bite and start making smart choices. When you rely on clean energy sources and a good daily strategy, consistency comes naturally — without deprivation and without unnecessary carbs.
